The World Cup
The World Cup
We are approaching one of the largest sporting events the world has to offer. Bigger than the Olympics, and a final match that will have viewership that dwarfs the yearly Super Bowl. The World Cup is one of a very short list of things that bring the world together. National pride for those competing is at an all-time high, and even Team USA will get into the fun this go around.
A few years back, the NHL put together a World Cup of their own. Something that had not been seen in decades was back. A tournament of 4 teams grew to 8, with a few interesting twists. Smaller European nations came together to be Team Europe, as well as a team of players from North America that were all under the age of 23. If you look back to that team in 2016, it was filled with today’s superstars, like McDavid, Matthews, MacKinnon Eichel, Gaudreau and Larkin. Many of these names are now household names, and captains of their teams.
With the NHL not allowing its player in the past few Olympics, the concept of a world tournament that features the worlds superstars may need a permanent return. The World Championships features some NHL superstars that may not be participating late into the playoffs, and World Juniors showcases the under 23 teams of the top hockey countries in the world, but it has been a long time since we saw the best the world has to offer representing their countries. What better city to host the event like Detroit, Michigan, the original Hockeytown.
For as much as we would like to see this pipedream happen, it would probably take the crown as the best hockey tournament in Michigan away from us here at Elite Amateur Sports. Until the world’s best take center stage, come check out our unbelievable tournaments all over the great mitten state.
