Take the Game Outdoors, and on Wheels
In Michigan, roller hockey is just as much a summer pass-time as ice hockey in the winter. Roller hockey is a variation of ice hockey that is played on inline skates instead of ice skates. The game is played on a hard surface such as concrete or asphalt and can be played indoors or outdoors. The rules are similar to ice hockey, with two teams of players trying to score goals by shooting a small rubber ball or puck into the opposing team's net.
One of the biggest differences between roller hockey and ice hockey is the playing surface. Because roller hockey is played on a hard surface, players can move faster and make sharper turns than on ice. This means that roller hockey requires a different set of skills, including better balance and agility, as well as the ability to control the ball or puck in a variety of conditions. There is also a lack of lines, as roller hockey is played without blue lines, meaning there is no offsides, and the red line is not designated for icing, as there is no icing as well.
Another major difference is the amount of players on the playing surface. In roller hockey, the game is played 4 on 4 as opposed to the standard 5 on 5. This allows for more room and creativity and keeps games fast paced and typically much more high scoring than the ice variant. The differences in playing surface and playing style lend for a great off season training as it exercises muscles, skill sets, and mental acuity different than ice hockey, but with great translation
Many ice hockey players also play roller hockey during the off-season or as a way to improve their skills. Roller hockey can help ice hockey players develop their footwork, stickhandling, and shooting abilities, as well as their overall fitness and conditioning. And for those who love the sport but don't have access to ice rinks or ice skates, roller hockey provides a great alternative that is just as exciting and challenging.
