Outstanding Programming (For Hockey Parents Only!)

Hockey is taking the world by storm. There is no doubt about that. The NHL has made big moves in getting back in with ESPN and Turner, opening more eyes towards the greatest sport on earth. It is also making it’s way into mainstream pop culture. One of the biggest podcasts in the world is Spittin’ Chiclets. “Miracle” is known as one of the greatest sports movies of all time. NHL players themselves are landing cameo rolls in Hollywood.

One show that highlighted the stereotypical “Hockey Bro” was Letterkenny. Created by a hockey player himself, Jered Keeso, the show revolves the struggles around living in a small rural Canadian town. Two of the main characters, Riley and Jonesy, are your chirp slingin, goal scoring, “heart-throbs” of town. No good main characters go without a nemesis. For these two, it is at times teammate, opponent, official, and spectator who grinds their gears to the point of silence. The players name is Shoresy, his identity never revealed until very recently.

Keeso has produced a Shoresy spinoff that revolves completely around the sport, a failing franchise, at its fight to “never lose again”. Like Letterkenny, you get glimpses into most locker rooms as the cast portrays a great range of what one would typically expect walking into a hockey dressing room. Almost all who play in the show are or were high level hockey players themselves.

None of the shows or movies we referenced are great for kids. Almost all have some sort of crude adult element to it, so enjoy responsibly. We have seen parents who have RV’s and parents will binge watch shows over the course of a weekend, and parent’s bond over that. So maybe talk with your parent friend group and while the kids are running wild between games at the next ice hockey tournament in Michigan, check out Letterkenny or Shoresy, (if everyone hasn’t all seen it already).
