Chel
Some parents out there may have been around during the turn of video games. Highlighted by Vince Vaughn and John Favreau of movie stardom, “Chel” or the EA Sports NHL Franchise was brought into popular culture in their early 90’s hit Swingers. Simply put, video games, and the NHL franchise have evolved into a world of its own. Now you see different styles of NHL Hockey Tournaments that can be played virtually with friends, and even see it played on ESPN for boat loads of money. Needless to say, kids these days are on screens way too much, but a little bit of video game time may not be the worst thing.
USA Hockey developed their own “video game” based learning system to help players create hockey IQ and knowledge while away from the rink with fun yet challenging games. The USA Hockey IntelliGym website even states that the basis of the development was to help fighter jet pilots become quicker cognitively to give them the upper edge. That is taking corner battles to a whole new level. Even playing on the Xbox or Playstation has gotten so realistic, kids are able to see and physically control when different plays and maneuvers can be done on the ice. But like all good things, be it video games or dangles, it should always be done in moderation.
Summer Hockey is a great time for moderation. That is why there is nothing better than a Michigan Hockey Tournament that only lasts a single day. Coming up very quickly is our 4v4 Showdown, and next month is our 3v3 Summer Bash, both are great ways to get out and play a whole bunch of hockey for the day before getting back to all that summer has to offer.
