The Cost of Inclusion? Free

No two people are alike. No two athletes are alike. Although sports may bring out people with many similarities, there is always individualism when it comes to team sports. Hockey is one of the most accepting locker rooms in sports, but unfortunately it is not a perfect place. There is very few things athletes are entitled to in life and sports, but equality is one of them.

Hockey is becoming more diverse as the popularity of the sport grows. Players of non-hockey-traditional backgrounds are now getting into the sport at younger ages, allowing them to grow up playing the best sport in the world. Although this should be an amazing thing, there are still times where inclusivity is dampened.

Race or nationality is not the only way the sport is growing in numbers. Players of certain sexuality, disability, and personal belief are now entering the game. With such a diverse group of backgrounds and beliefs, it is expected for there to be those who may not agree on the same topic. As a youth awakening movement is coming to fruition, youth are becoming more “educated” about world events, there is bound to be discussion about different situations. It is a great time to help the youth of tomorrow learn how to communicate their beliefs without getting into heated arguments or altercations. A lesson in humility and acceptance is one that can last a long time, and best of all, it doesn’t cost anyone more than their times and listening abilities.
